Storyboard and shooting schedule

The images below didn't come out how they were planned to, when I uploaded them onto the computer and tried to enlarge them they went all pixelated, but these images are just to show you that we have our ideas on paper although you cannot see them that well.

If you "click to enlarge" them you will see what I mean

I will soon be uploading our real storyboard made out of LEGO figures

Video analysis

Here is a song by Kesha called Tik Tok. It is a narrative based music video. This is because throughout the music video she is explaining what she is doing as well as showing it whilst she is singing. In some respects this video could possibly also be performance based but I believe it is more narrative based.

Above is the video for the Ok-Go's here it goes again. This music video would fall under the concept based music video following Goodwins Theory of music videos. The reason for it being concept based it because the music video doesn't really make any sense and is no way relevant to what they are singing about as you can see they are just moving around on treadmills.

This music video is Blink 182 and the song is called Rockshow, it is a performance based music video. This is because Blink 182 feature in the music video and are performing a lot in the music video.

Ancillary tasks

As part of our project we have been set the ask of designing and creating ancillary tasks from the following:
-Creating a digipak
-Creating an advert for a magazine
-Create a front page our bands website

The two that we have chosen to do is the digipak and the advert. My intentions for my digipak are to take lots of different interesting photos and edit them using photoshop and other editing software. I have decided to make the digipak 4 sides of which I have been given the dimensions for so it perfectly fits an album cover case. For the advert my aim is to try and sell the band as well as I can, as if I were to promoting the band.

Planning our ancillary Tasks

The idea of our ancillary tasks were to make our album cover out of a clip similar to that of in our music video. We thought that the most scenic area that we had used in the music video was the underpass so that is where we have decided that is where we are going to take our photography for the front cover.

Inspiration for our ancillary/analysing other existing work

The first idea of how to see what other magazine adverts looked like was to search it on the internet. Once searching this from just google images alone there was hundreds of different varieties. Below are a few that caught my eye and give our group inspiration:

Above are three good adverts to try and enhance sales of albums and live performances of each artist. The reason why they are good is because they all have a brand identity, this is what we have to try and achieve if we want our album cover to stand out from the crowd. As you can see they are all every different from one another.

Our idea is to use a particular location shown in our music video as both the front cover of the album and also for the face of the magazine advert. This will help us to create a brand identity as we will always use the same house colours in all of these projects. We have the idea of using the underpass which is used in our music video as being the backdrop for both of our ancillary tasks.

The reason for us choosing the underpass is because it is the most interesting location that we have decided to film at during filming. As this location is going to appear in all of our artists work, it will be easy for the audience to realise that they are all linked together, thus hopefully creating a good brand identity.

Below are two images that we are working on as being our front/back cover for our album cover.

Final Front/back covers:

Inside of the album digipak:

Below is an image of our final magazine advert for the second half of our ancillary tasks.
We decided that it would be a good idea to use the same location but a different style of shot to make the magazine advert. The reason for this was because we believed as a group that it would help the audience to recognise our band because of the brand identity that we had used throughout our project.

Brand Identity

For our project we have been asked to create a brand identity, this is where the band that we have chosen has particular things that people can relate to so they know who it is when they see it. For example they may have a logo or a particular photo to show people who the band is and the audience will automatically know who it is without seeing or hearing them.

We as a group are also going to attempt to create a brand identity for our band "The Nites". We have attempted to create a logo and also a picture but as of yet we haven't come to a final decision on which one we are going to use.

Our logo's and picture for our brand identity are to appear on our ancillary tasks when we design and create a digipak and a magazine advertisement.

Here is the logo for our band at the moment. It is also used as the front cover of their album, we as a group believe it isn't the most eyecatching album cover so our aim is to use this as an original idea but add to it.

Audience Feedback

The general audience feedback from when we did our presentation to the class was good. We had a lot of good comments as well as things that they said we could work on to make it even better. Comments included "Good interpreting on the lyrics". The reason why we got this was because they thought that our idea was good and was matched well with what the artist was singing at the time. Comments from our class that we said we could work on were "Ensure to vary transitions and shots", this was a fair comment because we didn't talk enough about it when we were presenting, but our intentions are to maybe use fast cut montage, high angles and lots of other different effects.

For this lesson we have learnt what we are going to do and what we are going to change when we come to the filming and editing stage. We are going to make sure that we use lots of different camera angles and shots, as well as lots of effects but try not to over complicate things.

Whatever gets you through lyrics

Annotations are in bold

Here is the new lyrics to the new artist that we have chosen called "the nites". The song whatever gets you through.

The beginning of the music video starts in black and white, from black appears scene at dinner.

You say to me
That everything is okay now
but it's not-
For this part of the song the idea is that we are filming the boy and girl at dinner and we can see that things aren't going well between them.

You try so hard
To put on that brave smile that you ain't got
I don't care how long it takes baby
I'll be by your side-
At this point the camera is panning around the table and we see the girl putting on a fake smile to the boy and the boy is completely confused about the situation and what is going to happen with their relationship. Also during these lyrics the girl gets up and begins to walk down the road with the boy chasing after her, he attempts to pull her arm but she shrugs him off and walks into the distance leaving him standing there.

What ever gets you through
I'll give you space
What ever you gotta do
to find your way

Baby you can cry, you can fall
You can break through it all
I'll be there for you
To do, what ever gets you through

What ever gets you through-
* For all of the chorus' we are going to have the same clip which is of the boy and girl in colour instead of black and white like the verses in the video. This is to show that what is in black and white is the present and it is very dull and stale, but what is in colour is what it used to be when they were happy.

I know it hurts
But I can't pretend to make it be alright
Some day, some how
You're gonna make to the other side
Coz no matter what it takes I will
I'll be what you need-
Now we see a clip of the boy being very upset that his "gilfriend" is being the way she is as he is flicking through an old photo album of them two together.

What ever gets you through
I'll give you space
What ever you gotta do
to find your way

Baby you can cry, you can fall
You can break through it all
I'll be there for you
To do, what ever gets you through-
*

What ever gets you
I will listen, be your shadow
I will run to you
I'll never leave you behind

I'll hold you close
I'll let you go
I'll give you time x3-
Here we see the boy is determined to get his girl friend back so he is driving, perhaps to go and get her?

Yeah!

Baby you can cry, you can fall
You can break through it all
I'll be there for you
To do,

What ever gets you through
I'll give you space
What ever you gotta do
to find your way

Baby you can cry, you can fall
You can break through it all
I'll be there for you
To do, what ever gets you through

Through x4

Complications

We have eventually after much discussion decided to change our song at the very last moment. Our reasons behind this were as follows: Firstly we were not sure if the examiners would have taken our previous song seriously, this was because it was a "joke" song, and this is exactly what we didnt want. We wanted them to see that we as a group take our media studies very seriously and wanted to make it a great success; secondly we thought that the song was too one dimensional as it only had one subject which would have limited us to what we could film and use in our music video; finally as it had some swearing in it we didn't think it would be appropriate to use as a school media project.

Our new plan overview:
Our new plan is to use a different artist called "The Nites" who are an Acoustic, Pop, Rock band formed of two members. The song that we are going to do is called "whatever gets you through".

Location, actors and props

The first and most obvious place that we are going to film is in and around the nandos restaurant in Stevenage, this will be okay as long as we get their permission.

Our locations after this will vary very widely. As our song is a parody we can almost film anywhere as our video can be as random as we want it to be. I have an idea of filming in a park and using a roundabout for a good effect.

Another location that I we have thought as a group would be good for our music video is to leave our camera in a chicken coop for a few hours. We would the bring it out and when we got to the editing stage we could speed it right up so it looks like the chickens are just dashing about.

I also thought that we could film in town and with a little help from a chicken suit we can film peoples reactions as we secretly film as the person in the chicken suit does random things.

New idea:

Because of having to change our music video and song our location for filming has completely changed. As the song is about a boy and a girl who are going out, and the girl does no longer want to be with the boy we are going to show them on just an everyday day walking along and showing what happens. The boy is happy but it is clear that the girl isnt.

Our first location is of a restaurant where it shows through the window or inside the couple arguing and then the girl storms out of the restaurant with the boy chasing out after her and grabbing her arm as they walk down a well lit street. The girl shrugs him off and she continues to walk off into the distance whilst the we show the boy just standing still watching her walk away from him.

Our next location is of an everyday place like the boys bedroom where we show him upset about the ordeal, whereas we show the girl (in a splitscreen) having a good time out on a date with someone else whilst the girl and the boy are on a break.

Location Shots

Below are some pictures of the areas that we have filmed in at the moment, some of the images are missing as we forgot to take a stills camera with us at the time that we were film but we will upload those images very soon.

Actors

It has been very difficult to get the 'right actors for the job' during filming as it was either our group that was busy at the time that the actors could act or vica-verca so this left us with no choice for me to act in it along with another girl. It also meant that Olly (another member of our group).

Props

The major prop that we used during the filming stage was my car. The reason for this was because we needed a scene where we could show the boy on his own showing emotion that it wasn't going well with his girlfriend and he didn't know what was going to happen.

Our Artist

The Nites consist of Anthony (vocals) and Michael (guitar), two guys from South London, who met in 2004 and started gigging the acoustic circuit in and around London. Two guitars and a beat up amp, did them proud and helped them to gradually build up a close following, but after playing cover after cover, they now write and perform their own songs.

Below are the guideline lyrics for our chosen song "the nando's skank". The lyrics below are not all the same as the original version which was done free style (made up on the spot). The reason for this is because as it is a free style the song is a bit stop start in areas and we would like to speed it up a little bit and cut the things we think that we wont need.

With us cutting the song the only problem we will now be face with will be the fact that the lyrics might not allow the song to run for the certain amount of time that we have been told to do so. This being our only problem with the song, I believe we can sort it out by either slowing down the tempo, or adding in extra lyrics if possible.

I said 'Oi you are you gonna bang doe?'
No I want some fuckin' Nando's
I wanna eat up with chicken and chips
Everyone knows I free style like this

When I free style on the beat about chicken
You know it's finger lickin'
And I'm gonna pass it over to Example now
And he's gonna free style and show you how he-

Chicken, chicken wings,
They're my favorite things
And I love to sing

I say chicken, chicken wings
If you give me them,
I will eat them tings

Nando's from me
Fat chance I got a black card
If you come to be and ask for chicken
You'll get a fat scar in your left cheek
I eat Nando's every week

Some time on a tuesday
Some time on a thursday
I get free drinks,
refillable for when I'm thirsty
On a Thursday
I eat chicken in the worst way

I love Nando's more than you're mum does
More than you're mum does
I say oh my tongue is on fire
Is say Nando's I desire

Notion of looking

The notion of looking in music videos can include:
- Screens Within Screens
- Telescopes
- Eyes
- Looking Glass
- Indirect/Direct Address
- Voyeurism

All of these different notions of looking help to create different moods and atmospheres. We are hoping to try and incorporate as many different notions of looking when we are at the filming stage.

Websites

The website that I have looked at is the official Eminem website. At first it doesn't look very interesting but this is much more to it than you can see. For example if you were to click on the "news" you can see there are interviews with Eminem and also news about what is going on in his new music videos etc.

If you click on the "album" drop down you are directly given links to iTunes for all of Eminems albums. This is good promoting as you can go straight onto his website and buy his album. It is very good as you can buy any album from his first ever released one in 1999 called The Slim Shady LP all the way to his newest one Recovery released 6/22/2010.

The "video" link is quite self explanatory, you click on it and you can watch music videos from all of his songs as well as buying them off iTunes and Amazon.

Opening up the "events" would normally bring up all of the shows that Eminem is going to perform at within the next couple of months, but at the moment Eminem is not on tour so there is nothing under this drop down.

When you click on "community" three different links come up and they are for forums, this is where Eminem fans can discuss this artist as well as ask questions to one-another.

The "store" drop down takes to you the Eminem merchandise where you can buy t-shirts and hoodies etc.

Finally there is a link to the top left of the screen where you can choose to follow Eminem on Twitter, Facebook and myspace.

The online revolution

The online revolution has had a huge impact on every artist all over the world, in some cases it being an advantage, but in others it also having its down sides.

The online revolution meant that artists could now become more well known as they were able to sign up to social networking websites and also upload videos onto posting websites such as YouTube.com, for people to watch all over the world. But with this came its down sides, illegal downloading has hit all artists hard. Illegal downloading on software such as Limewire has cost many artists lots of money as more and more people are beginning to spend less money for the music that they now listen to.

It is not only the illegal downloading that has lost the artists sales on the internet, it has also lots them sales in the shops.

An artist that has used the online revolution to their advantage is the Arctic Monkeys. They started off by just posting their music onto a social networking site, myspace.com where they gained popularity. After having many listeners they began to hold gigs and each week they would see more and more people turn out in their numbers. Eventually they were scouted by a major record label "the domino effect" and have had success since then.

Other artist that has made it huge (and is still on the up) is sixteen year old Justin Bieber who started off by posting videos onto YouTube.com. After receiving millions of views he was approached by Global popstar Usher who asked him if he would collaborate with him, an offer he could not refuse, and from then on Justin hasn't looked back.

Having a 'niche'

Creating a niche is the meaning when an artists creates something that has never been seen before. For example when they began to use their humour and videos to show that they were different. At first many people didn't like this, as they believed that they were being too cheeky for their own good, but as time went on they became more well known and more liked all over the world.

In our music video we are going to try and create a niche also. The way that we are going to do this, at the moment is not completely known, but we know that we want our video to be a parody "a mocking video" either of already made videos or just so random that nobody can take it seriously.

The way that we are going to make our niche is hopefully by getting hold of a chicken suit (as our song is about nandos) and just do lots of random things with it.

Although all of the above was our original idea, it seems that we may be forced to change our song. This is because we as a group think that the song may be too difficult to make a music video for. The reason for this is, as a song it is quite one dimensional, as it is only talking about one thing through-out the song, limiting what we can film to use as footage.

This may not be what we are wanting to do considering that we are going start filming soon, but we do have another song already lined up because we knew that they may be a problem before we made our final decision. Our other song is called outkast by Arthur Smith, who has recently wrote this song.

We have now chosen to change all of these ideas and start again completely over. We are now definitely sticking with an artist called "the nites" who are band made of two people. They are an acoustic, pop, rock band and the song that we have chosen is called "Whatever gets you through".

Album covers

The album above is by Little Boots, the graphics that have been in this cover are very good. It also includes the artist on the front cover.

Here is an album by La Roux. This like many other album covers that get released is very plain, the reason why it will sell well is because La Roux is shown on the front on the album cover as their star motif, meaning she is prompting herself with her own face.

Here is an album cover by Florence and the Machine that stands out from the crowd completely, it is very different and is a very good and clever design. That have used the name of the album well with the images and they have used the artist as their star motif.

The album cover that we are going to try to make ours like like will be one similar to Eminem. The reason why we have chosen this as a group was because he uses plain covers yet they are very meaningful and also interesting.

The ACDC album cover from above is very simplistic but it is very effective. The reason for this album cover being successful is because it stands out very will with the cannon on its own on the front cover with just the name of the Artist and album.

All of these album covers have the same thing in common, they all have a star motif. Whether it is an image of the artist or lead singer of the band, or if it is just an image that fans can relate to, to know that it is that particular artists album. This is our task, we are going to have to think of a very good star motif if we want our album cover to stand out from the crowd and want people to buy it even if they haven't heard the music.

Intertextuality In Music Video's

We have been watching particular types of music video that use a video game software to make music videos. These type of music video usually feature the artist as a cartoon form in a vitual world, for example:

Robbie Williams- Let love be your energy
This music video features Robbie Williams in cartoon form running through a 'virtual world'. It has lots of different locations showing him running non-stop throughout the video.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Californication
This video features the whole of the band in cartoon form. This music video takes the form of a video game showing the characters completing challenges and gaining points.

Gorillaz- Clint Eastwood
This music video is different to the other two as it uses a different style of cartoon. This video seems to make no sense what so ever. Gorillaz are known for just being cartoons and not revealing their true identity.

Different types of music video

So far we have learnt that there are three different types of music video. The first one is a narrative based video, this type of video tells the audience a story throughout the music video. A good example of this is Lady GaGa's bad romance. The second type of music video that we have learnt about is called a performance based video. This type of music video is usually used for rock bands such as Green day, where the band are featured in the music video singing along to the lyrics whilst something is also happening to go with the lyrics. The final type of music video is called a concept based video. This sort of video uses original ideas that haven't been used in a video before to try and make the video different and easy to recognise. A band that have used this is Ok-Go in the song here it goes again.

Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features which distinguish the music video as a form:

- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist.
- Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require.
- Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.
- Intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.

Introduction

On this blog I am going to be adding my work over the course of the year. The project that we have been set is to create a music video as well as producing two out of three ancilliary tasks. We could choose from the following:
Create and design a front cover of a mazagine
Create and design a cover for a CD
Create and design a web page.

The two that we have chosen to do are the magazine cover and CD cover.
